Getting started with Measure and Price

By the end of this page, one of your products will be sold by the metre, square metre, kilogram or litre, and you will have seen a customer’s price appear as they type. It takes about five minutes.

The pictures on these pages outline in orange whatever Measure and Price adds to a normal WooCommerce page, so you can see at a glance what is new.

Before you start

  • WooCommerce is installed and you have at least one product.
  • You know the price you charge per unit, for example £24.99 per square metre, or per pack, for example £62.48 for a pack that covers 2.5 m².

Install the plugin

In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins, then Add New, and search for “Measure and Price”. Install it and activate it. Nothing changes on your site yet: products behave exactly as before until you switch one over.

Open a product

Go to Products and edit the product you want to sell by measurement. Scroll to the Product data box. There is a new tab on the left called Sold by.

Say what it is sold by

On the Sold by tab, choose Length, Area, Weight or Volume. Then choose the unit your price is for, such as m² for flooring or m for fabric. The rest of the fields appear once you have chosen.

Every field has a short explanation under it. The two that matter most:

  • Sold in steps of. The smallest amount you will sell. Flooring in packs of 2.5 m²: enter 2.5. Fabric cut to the nearest 10 cm: enter 0.1. Whole kilograms: leave it at 1.
  • Call a step a. Optional. If you enter “pack”, customers see “5 packs” in the basket instead of a bare number.

If you think in packs rather than square metres, change Price is entered per to Step. Then the price on the General tab is the pack price, and the plugin works out the price per m² for the shop page.

Enter the price

On the General tab, the price label now says what the price is per, for example “Regular price (£) per m²”. Enter it. Sale prices work the same way.

Look at your product

Click Update, then View product. Under the price you will see a field asking how much the customer needs. Type an amount. A sentence appears underneath saying what they will get, how much it covers, and what it costs:

12.3 m² rounds up to the next pack. Each pack is £62.48.

Add it to the basket and the same amount appears under the product name, at checkout, on the order and in the emails.
